For production use in 2024–2025, the best option is:
** Ubuntu LTS (Long-Term Support) version: Ubuntu 22.04 LTS**
Reasons:
Stable & well-tested: Koha community and support forums have verified it extensively.
Perl & SIP2 compatibility: Many Koha SIP2 modules (like Net::Server, IO::Socket::INET, and Net::Z3950) work well with Ubuntu 22.04’s default Perl version.
Security updates until 2027 (standard) or 2032 (ESM).
Koha official Debian packages: Koha’s Debian packages align well with Debian 11 (Bullseye), which is roughly equivalent to Ubuntu 22.04’s package versions.
Less risk with older Perl/Apache/MariaDB versions: SIP2 relies on stable Perl libraries — newer Ubuntu versions like 24.04 may have too-new Perl versions which can break older SIP2 scripts if not tested properly.
It’s the latest LTS and will be supported longer (till 2029 standard, 2034 ESM).
But: Some SIP2 modules might need to be recompiled or manually installed from CPAN because the system Perl version might be too new for older SIP2 scripts.
Good choice for testing or if you have an experienced admin to manage custom Perl dependencies.
Use Ubuntu 22.04 LTS for Koha LMS with SIP2 if you want a stable, low-maintenance server.
It’s the version most Koha libraries are still using in production.
